The story shows how Andrea reared Adrienne from the time she was eight until she died at the age of 15. While Andrea narrates the story in present tense, she uses flashbacks to explain how she gained custody of Adrienne from their mother, how their relationship evolved over time, and how they displayed their unconditional love for each other. As she lay dying, Adrienne taught others, including her older sister Andrea who raised her, how to live.
